Back in the game

We’ve said it before but we’ll say it again….24 hours is a long time in ICU and a lot can change in that time.

As evidence, I present as Exhibit A a pic of Savannah yestersay

Skip forward a day and I present Exhibt B…SJ right now.

Quite a change in a day and thankfully all good changes today.  Off the vent,  off CPAP and back on our old pal vapotherm with settings not all that far away from her pre-op special care days.

Fingers crossed, if SJ keeps up this rate of progress, we may well be checking back out of ICU and returning to special care in the next few days, as was the original plan.

So there you go….yesterday’s drama has begun to fade away and Savannah is well and truly back in the recovery game today.

In other news, first training bike ride was completed this morning with a couple of gentle laps of Richmond park at the crack of dawn. Things I learnt from today’s ride were:

1) My bike seems to perform reasonably well on downhill slopes, satisfactorily on the flat and very poorly on uphill slopes. I will, of course, be taking this technical fault up with the manufacturers.

2) Everyone else in Richmond Park seems to know what they’re doing and goes very fast indeed (I can only assume they don’t have faulty bikes like mine!).

3) Cycling makes your feet cold – who knew?!

Team SJ now consists of 4 of us with a few others on the side lines, waiting to be fully convinced to sign up. A special mention,  however,  needs to go to 1/4 of the current team,  Alistair who as a warm up to our 185 mile bike ride in May, will be running the London Marathon (again!) in April and has decided to very generously donate his sponsorship to First Touch. Go Team SJ….and here’s the link to sponsor us just in case anyone missed it the first 3 times!

  1. Greetings Sam and Roz! At last I have managed to access your blog and now have a lot of catching up to do! Was typing “thetiniestthing” instead of teeniest but Les has now put me right on it. Have been getting updates through him anyway and been thing of you all lots.
Savannah is gorgeous and clearly a tough cookie. Well done to all three of you!
Met a 46 year old man last week who was born at 6 months and before they had all the knowledge and technology they have now. He wasn’t expected to survive but he did. He spent the whole of his first year in hospital but has gone on to lead a happy and successful life.
    Sending love

  3. Hi R&S
Great to see that SJ is making good progress. Amazing how much she has changed so rapidly!
Also great to hear about the epic bike ride. I’ve been known to ride a bike from time to time and can confirm that uphills require a slightly harder push of the pedals then the downhills. People tend to try 2 tactics to try and make this easier: either get our and ride up lots of hills to get stronger or spend huge amounts of money on posh lightweight upgrades for your bike. Only one of these methods is effective I’m afraid.

Good luck with the training and send SJ our love.
