Our own miracle baby

Whenever a visitor comes to meet Savannah they are obviously expecting her to be tiny but seeing her in person it is always a shock at how small she really is, so to try and give a bit more perspective here is a picture of SJ next to a tape measure 🙂

We also caught the first episode of channel 5’s series “Miracle Babies” last night filmed at a neonatal unit (didn’t catch where!). Most of the babies are older and bigger than Savannah (who is now 19 days old and she’ll be 29 weeks tomorrow).  I am sure that premature babies will feature in future episodes but the show does give a good sense of life on the ward and scale to the size of the babies.

Savannah is our miracle baby and continues to do well. She remains on CPAP but is still having moments of apnea and bradycardia but fantastically she is back up to get birth weight this morning which is great news. Her feeds are also stepping back up so hopefully she’ll continue to put the weight on.

She unfortunately seems to be struggling a little more today with an increasing number of destats so we’ll have to see if she manages to stay on CPAP or has to be re intubated.  She had also just been x-rayed to check for infection. Fingers crossed she picks up a little this afternoon.

Yesterday she also had another brain scan and the bleed hasn’t got any bigger and looks as though it may be dispersing, but they’ll continue to monitor it over the next few days and weeks.  The risk of increased liklihood of developmental issues because of ithe bleed seems low but there are obviously increased risks because of her prematurity. Frustratingly the doctors don’t have a crystal ball and can’t tell us yet what the impact may or may not be and, as with any child, we probably won’t know for sure until she is older and at each key development stage.

So all we can do is take each day as it comes, but Savannah is our miracle baby and brings us new joy and love every day.

    1. Hoping you’ll break through these tough initial few weeks. Also hoping mum and dad take a big breath and stay strong. Our thoughts and love to you all.
