The realities of ICU

So the realities of being on ICU really hit home today. Mid morning and one of the other babies in the nursery had a bad turn… Sirens blaring,  lights flashing, doctors running in, screen put up. Sent my heart racing so God knows how the mum herself felt.

We all got turfed out of the room whilst they re intubated Jack so I got chatting to the other mums. All the babies in the unit are premature two at 24 weeks and two at 26. Two of the mums had bleeding throughout their pregnancy and one only found out she was pregnant at week 23 and 7 days later she’d given birth to Ava!!  The other mum knew she was pregnant for two weeks but ended up giving birth on the family bathroom floor.

Amazing stories but also starting to hear about their babies which is pretty hard to hear. Especially when being told that their 24 week old baby was really good and strong for the first 3 weeks then got an infection which caused a collapsed lung and at 8 weeks old is still struggling to get over it.

Coupled all this with the doctors last night trying to put Savannah back on CPAP just for her to struggle a lot and have to be re intubated too; which was hugely disappointing.

It is so hard to see Savannah unsettled and to hear all the heart wrenching stories on the nursery.  Apparently the sirens and flashing lights become “normal” but not sure they become any easier to deal with and I dread any first hand experience of them.

So a tough night/morning but Savannah seems fairly oblivious to it all and her feeds have increased again which is good news.

  1. I have a feeling I may regret asking but I’m going to anyway: CPAP? Re incubated? (did she escape?)

Continuing to send all our love your way.

    1. CPAP = Continuous positive airway pressure. At the moment Savannah is on a ventilator (intubated I mean). CPAP is with a tiny mask to aid breathing but no tube. She escaped me!! 🙂
