A day’s a long time in ICU it seems and for someone just 6 days old, it represents over 15% of their entire life. So by that calculation, a day in Savannah’s life is equivalent to about 6 years in mine. And just as quite a lot changes in my life over a 6 year period, an awful lot changes in SJ’s during the course of a day (her equivalent of 6 years on my time or something like 42 dog years if you’re still following!).
So when we left on Thursday night, she had recently restarted her feeds of the smallest amount imaginable. ..just half a mil of milk every hour. An improvement on the way the day had started but not enough to fill her up just yet. She was also still yet to poo so our worry was still growing about her gut and bowls being able to do what they’re meant to. By Friday morning tho, great progress. Her feeds have increased overnight to a whopping 1.5ml an hour and she’s had a poo…wooppee…..Just like my Dad had wooped, cheered and documented for prosperity every fart and bowl movement during his battle with bowl cancer, here we are again, rejoicing in the news that a poo has been passed! Hopital’s seem to do this to you and put the most ridiculously mundane events in a whole new light.
Speaking of hospitals, we’re starting to get to know our adopted new home for the next few months rather well and have now discovered that only the newbies, amatures and suckers go to the M&S cafe by the main entrance for their £2.50 cappuccinos, whilst those of us in the know go to the Costa kiosk on the first floor for our £1.60 caffine fixes! That’s a saving of 90p a pop or a couple of hundred pounds over the course of Savannah’s stay here. We must open up a savings account for her one of these days and kick start it with the money we’re now saving on coffees and hot chocolates. We’ve also spotted that the hospital canteen does a mean sounding fry up for about the same price as an m&s cap, complete with something referred to on the menu as a “fried slice” (I have no idea what it’s a slice of but we’ve decided to treat ourselves to a fry up at the weekend so I’m looking forward to finding out!).
Enough of the food reviews tho. ..back to the star of the show and the other amazing news in her short journey thus far….she’s 1 week old today…..far from out of the woods yet but a milestone nonetheless.
