Good news first…..as planned, Savannah woke up this morning, displayed her displeasure in no uncertain term at having a breathing tube down her throat and was promptly extubated.
Bad news…..1 in 1,000 extubations result in the baby’s airways becoming inflamed on removal of the tube, making it difficult for them to get air into their lungs and causing them to emit a weird squawk when they breath. No prizes for guessing which side of this unlikely statistic SJ fell down on!
After an hour off the vent and back on vapourtherm, it seems the drama began to unfold and with Savannah’s breathing deteriorating and squawking getting louder, the docs stepped in with a cpap machine, a face full of adrenaline via a nebuliser and a dose of steriods to try to calm the inflamation and get her breathing back on track without going straight back on the vent.
So once again, SJ seems to have been dealt a lousy hand but once again she seems to be battling her way through it.
The revised plan is to do everything possible to prevent her going back onto the vent and to keep helping her upper airways clear as the drugs kick in over the next 24 hours. Hopefully she can get then back onto the vapotherm and back to somewhere close to where she was before but this time with 20 20 vision. Sounds simple enough and as ever, SJ is working her, now slightly less teeny, little socks off to try and achieve this.
And in other news….Mr Bunny has come down with some sort of bunny sympathy pains and been admitted as a patient to the same bed as SJ so they can aid each other’s speedy recovery.
What a pair!
