Day 4 off the steroids

Savannah continues to be doing okay off the steroids although her oxygen requirements are creeping up slightly (now sitting between 35-45%). She is yoyoing on her saturation levels moving from 75 to 95 in seconds, so it looks like today will mostly involve silencing alarms.  She is fairly settled but back on the caffeine now she is off the steriods which has the side effect of making her heart race slightly. Bless her it must be hugely tiring so we need to try and let her rest as much as possible today… and hold back from touching or disrupting her too much.

SJ is also slightly anemic too so she may require a blood transfusion (basically a little top up to increase the red blood cell count – I think – to help ease the demands on her breathing).  We are still waiting for the results back from one blood test but so far the plan is to try and let Savannah sort herself out.

This week, though it is us parents who are being naughty and not following Savannah’s good progress with spells of worry. I think we are both just over analysing every little desaturation, every little oxygen tweak and every little stretch or squirm concerned that it means SJ is going backwards. It can be tricky to remember to watch the baby and not the monitors.

But last week the consultant did say he would be delighted if she ends this week on 50% oxygen; so even though it is hard to see the dials creeping up, she seems to be on track.  Fingers crossed her oxygen doesn’t go up any higher over the next couple of days.

Savannah is however at risk of getting big-headed with all the attention she is getting from all of you following this blog, her well wishers, her sea of cards and presents. Though, of course, she is absolutely worth it all… Thank you x
