So despite the infection markers going down and Savannah appearing to be fighting her infection she is still struggling today and had taken a slight turn for the worse this afternoon.
More blood has been taken to see if she has a virus and there has been more playing around with ventilator settings to try and stop the destats that still keep happening.
Sadly some of the bad destats are accompanied by bradycardia’s and consequently bagging (see Glossary). There is nothing more harrowing or scary than the sight of seeing your baby turn blue… I am clocking up the number of nurses who have to give me hugs and tissues and even random hugs from random doctors in the canteen!
We went to our first ICU family session today with cake, tea and medical staff. We had a good chat around breathing and came away knowing that premature babies will have trouble with their lungs… Varying from being a bit weezy, being more susceptible to colds through to Chronic Lung Disease (which is actually not as bad as it sounds… Should still lead normal everyday lives but might not be Olympic athletes ).
So SJ has had her morphine increased and been given more drugs to sedate her to stop her fighting the ventilator so she can get the right level of support she needs. One step forward in fighting the infection but seems like two steps back on her breathing. Fingers crossed tomorrow is better or at least less traumatic.
