Wake up, shower, hospital, grab wife (now up and about and back to her normal mobile self), head to ICU to see SJ. Off to a good start..SJ’s had a good night and is beginning to wriggle around like a little wriggly thing. Quick chat with the consultant reveals a host more things to worry about, none of which we have even the slightest control over but SJ is stable and he’s as happy as he can be so the worrying would only be a waste of energy.
Over a cappuccino in the hospital’s very own M&S café. …some big news. Roz and I have settled on a name and it’s not Sam Junior! It’s much much better. It’s:
Savannah Juliette Hurst
Such a beautiful name for such a beautiful little girl. And as an added bonus as well as being Savannah, she’s already got her first nickname….SJ!
And yet more good news today…..Roz is discharged and a free woman again.
As a reward for her rekindled mobility and freedom, Roz gets her first reach inside SJ’s incubator and is rewarded with a finger grab… their very first contact.
The rest of the day is spent watching Savannah practicing her moves for the next season of strictly. Great as it is that she has this much energy, all her wriggling around has caused a number of her tubes to come out so as we head home for the night, a doctor is trying to put a new line into SJ, which looks a little like trying to thread a needle whilst horse riding blindfolded. How on earth the doc is able to do this is mind boggling. In fact, the care, skill, science and shear effort going into keeping our daughter alive and getting her healthy is all totally mind boggling. From the very moment we arrived at St George’s, the care we’ve been given has been amazing. Turns out that we’re fortunate enough to live a 5 minute drive from one of the south’s best baby hospitals and boy are we pleased about that stoke of luck right now. The doctors and nurses are all complete geniuses.
9pm and we’re home to an empty house. No baby daughter with and even the dog’s deserted us for the weekend. We’re shattered but relieved that the first full day of Savannah’s long journey has got off to a good start.
Who knows what tomorrow will bring.
